Sparkling wine sweetness levels

To compound confusion about types of sparkling wines, they also have different levels of sweetness indicated on their labels according to the amount of unfermented sugar left in the wine when it is bottled:

Brut nature (0.0-0.5%) should taste bone dry (sometimes called “extra brut”)

Brut (0.5-1.5%) should taste dry with not much perception of sweetness although experienced wine drinker may sense sugar above 0.5%

Extra Dry (1.2-2.0%) tastes slightly sweet to most tasters

Sec (1.7-3.5%) literally translates to “dry”, but is noticeably sweet.

Demi-Sec (3.3-5.0%) is very sweet and

Doux (pronounced “DEW”) (over 5.0%) is extremely sweet.

Any sparkling wines labeled Sec, Demi-Sec, or Doux would be considered dessert wines.  They pair very well with rich wedding cake toasts.

“Extra dry” is sweeter than “Brut”?  Wow!
