Dessert wines

Dessert Wines come in different styles:

Sparkling Dessert Wine
Lightly Sweet Dessert Wine
Richly Sweet Dessert Wine
Sweet Red Wine
Fortified (with more alcohol)  Wine

Sweet wines are made by stopping fermentation before all the grape sugars are converted to alcohol by the yeast. They are not usually made by adding non-grape sugars to wine after fermentation stops but amateur winemakers and some of the smaller wineries may add sugar and preservatives to a dry wine before bottling.

Fermentation can be stopped in different ways such as by cooling the wine or adding alcohol such as brandy to it. Any method that deactivates yeast present will stop fermentation. The result is a rich wine sweetened with natural grape sugars.
