Filtered sediment

Most commercial wines do not need decanting or aeration other than pouring the wine into the glass. Over 90% of commercial wines are highly filtered to remove sediment before bottling so there is no need to decant.

However, any wine labeled “unfiltered” may have sediment in it.

Red wines, especially older red wines, may have coarse or fine red dust or sand on the bottom or along the sides of the bottle. The sediment is usually comprised of tannins, red pigments (anthocyanins), dead yeast, acid crystals, or fragments from the skins of the grape that have precipitated over time. Again as with colorless acid crystals in white wine, this does not affect the taste of the wine.

Look for “unfiltered” on the label
