Carafes for table wine

Carafes

A carafe, (pronounced (kah RAFF), is a small container usually used for bulk wine. It may come in different sizes to hold 8 oz (375 ml), 16 oz (500 ml), 25 oz (one-fifth or 750 ml), or 1 liter (1000 ml).

These different sizes are used to sell wines in different amounts usually poured from a bulk wine source.

The bulk source of the wine may be from a box wine or jug of wine which is less expensive and can be sold for less than usual full bottles of wine.

Carafes differ from decanters in that they are mostly a substitute for pouring from a wine bottle. They do not have as much extra room for aeration as decanters do. Carafes are used more commonly for inexpensive table wines and more in Europe than the USA.
