When clearing the table of wine glasses at the end of a meal, be sure to remove the glasses from the guest’s right side if they are still seated at the table. Only do this if the guest has indicated it is ok to remove the wine glass.
When you take the glasses back to the dishwashing area, if the glasses are not likely to be washed within the hour, it is a good practice to rinse out the glasses so the wine pigment and any crystals or sediment do not dry on the glass.
Also in the restaurant, or if you are at home, it is a good practice to rim the glasses of any lipstick or smudges by using a paper or cloth towel between your thumb and forefinger running them completely around the top edge of the glass while rinsing the glass.
Automatic dishwashers can be poor at getting dried sediment or lipstick off of the glasses on their own. And this will save you time in polishing the cleaned glasses the next time they are used.
